Leyendecker & Lemire Law Firm Announces Client’s Technology Patent

Solution Dynamics, LLC Patents
Centralized Refrigeration System

May 23, 2013

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — Leyendecker & Lemire, LLC, an intellectual property and business law firm providing Intellectual Property (IP) and business-related legal services to entrepreneurs, individual inventors, and businesses of all sizes, announces the firm recently represented patentee Calvin Wohlert of Solution Dynamics, LLC on a patent for a centralized refrigeration system.

Many facilities have their HVAC provided by Rooftop Heating and Cooling Units (RTU’s), which are self-contained units that utilize small air cooled refrigeration systems to provide building air conditioning. These units are easy to install and usually have a lower first cost than more traditional centralized chilled water systems.  The drawback of these units is that they are not as energy efficient, and the maintenance cost is often higher than with centralized systems.  In small facilities these types of units make practical sense; however, larger facilities may have 20 to 50 of these units scattered across their roof with a cumulative cooling capacity in the hundreds of tons.  The Central Direct Expansion (Central DX for short) is an innovative approach which involves the installation of a high efficiency centralized refrigeration system for facilities that have multiple RTU’s.  While RTU’s are often installed as the lowest first cost option, they are not the most energy efficient means of providing facility heating and cooling, and normally have high maintenance costs due to non-serviceable compressors failures.  The conversion of standalone RTUs to a central refrigerant system can have quick paybacks, increased reliability, and significant environmental benefits.
